Google Android and Apple iPhone dominate US mobile web traffic

A mobile metrics report [PDF] from mobile advertising agency AdMob, found that Android-based handsets, combined with Apple's iPhone and iPod touch, were responsible for three-quarters of all mobile web traffic in the United States last month.

Over the same period, AdMob found that mobile web traffic from BlackBerry devices had dipped by around two per cent, accounting for just 12 per cent of all mobile web traffic. Palm's newest handset, the Pre, fared even worse, accounting for just five per cent of mobile web traffic in October compared to 10 per cent the previous month.

Globally, Apple's iPhone and iPod touch account for around 50 per cent of all web requests. Smartphones running the Symbian operating system, such as Nokias, account for 25 per cent, with Android enjoying an 11 per cent share of global web traffic. BlackBerrys account for seven per cent of global mobile web traffic, with smartphones running Windows Mobile making up three per cent.

AdMob – which was recently acquired by Google for $750 million (£450 million) – also released detailed breakdowns of which handsets were responsible for the most web requests in the US. The HTC Dream – sold in the UK as the T-Mobile G1 – accounts for 36 per cent of all Android mobile web traffic, followed by Motorola's Droid, with 24 per cent. The Droid has received rave reviews in the US, though it's unclear whether or not the handset will be launched in the UK. Two other HTC devices, the Magic and the Hero, accounted for 21 per cent and eight per cent respectively.

The majority of internet traffic on BlackBerry handsets came from the BlackBerry Curve 8300, which accounted for 44 per cent of all BlackBerry web traffic, followed by the Pearl with 16 per cent and the Storm with 12 per cent.

The increasing use of smartphones, such as the iPhone, to access data and services over the internet, has caused some network issues in the UK. O2, which, until recently, was the exclusive iPhone carrier, suffered regular periods of downtime, with the company admitting that devices such as the iPhone were placing heavy demands on its 3G network.
